What are credit points?
If you look at college and university prospectuses, you will notice that the courses and qualifications are given credit points and levels. These points are given for the amount of learning you have to do to get the qualification. In Scotland, the points and levels are expressed in terms of the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF).
What is credit transfer, and what is it for?
If you have already successfully studied at higher education level, either within the UK or in another country, your previous study may count towards your chosen qualification. This is determined by allocating points to courses, which can then be converted into credit towards the qualification you hope to achieve. This process is known as credit transfer.
Recognition of previous experience and informal learning
Achievements gained outside 'the classroom' may also be formally recognised through a system called recognition of prior learning (RPL). This system is particularly useful for mature students with workplace or professional experience.
Recognition of professional qualifications gained overseas
If you have a professional qualification from another country, you may be able to obtain recognition for your previous qualifications and re-establish your career in Scotland.
National schemes for asylum seekers and refugees with professional qualifications
There are a number of national schemes that have been designed to assist asylum seekers and refugees who have previous professional qualifications.
The authors of Diverse Routes would like to thank Ruth Whitaker, Glasgow Caledonian University, for her help in compiling the information on the recognition of prior learning.
