Recognition of
prior learning

Previous experience and informal learning

What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is a system by which colleges and universities may formally consider achievements gained outside 'the classroom'.

RPL is also referred to as Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).

It is particularly useful for mature students with workplace or professional experience. RPL may be used to help you re-enter learning or as a contribution towards a programme of study.

How do I provide evidence of this learning?

The RPL process involves reflecting on your past experiences, being able to show what you have learned and the extent to which this learning is transferable to another context.

The type of RPL claim you make will depend on the nature of your learning and the requirements of the particular institution, as well as the programme of study you wish to undertake. The admissions office of individual colleges and universities will be able to provide you with further information and guidance on the RPL or APEL procedures for their establishment and the possible cost of the process. You will also be able to find out about what support and advice is available for putting together and presenting the evidence the institution requires.

Europass

Whether you are planning to enrol for study at college or university, a training programme or looking for employment, it is important to be able to present your skills and competences clearly and in a format that is easily understood. The Europass CV and Europass Language Passport describe skills and competences gained through prior informal learning as well as formal education and training. Both can be completed online on the Europass website. National Europass Centres have also been established.
